Fact of the week: 1 Today

Tuesday, July 12th, 2011

I came across the fact that it’s one Neptunian year or 164.79 Earth years since man first discovered Neptune on 24 September 1864. So technically it’s Neptunes first birthday, although it’s much much much older than that and it’s a planet so it doesn’t really have a birthday! To celebrate I thought I’d do a very quick post and visual.

It then reminded my of my first ever job at Form many many moons ago and a certain Mr Sephton and his interesting fact of the day. If I remember righty, Matt would announce his interesting fact on a Friday afternoon over a brew. So and I’m going to revive that tradition and try to post one a week with a little visual.

Stefan Wehrmeyer, a 23-year-old German programmer, has developed a Google Maps application called Mapnificent. It shows you the places in your city that you can reach in a given amount of time using public transport. Or put in yours and a friends locations and it works out your best meeting point. Works for London, too. Pretty sweet apart from the dodgy name.

Talk by Etienne Mineur

Tuesday, May 24th, 2011

DF went to a very interesting talk last night, courtesy of Wolff Olins, by crazy French digital designer/artist/programmer man Etienne Mineur. Eitenne, co-founder of Incandescence, took us through his archive of experimental projects for Issey Miyake that played around with different types of user interaction and audio/visual experience.

Eitenne is currently brewing up something very cool indeed, see picture above, that combines old school board games, the printed page and touch screen technology with the dark art of conductive inks.

Clever Concrete

Thursday, May 19th, 2011

Following on from the previous post about clever ideas that have the potential to help others, we came across Concrete Canvas via the always amazing BBC website. Every now and again you see something and think ‘genius’ and Concrete Canvas is one of those moments.

The possibilities for good with this invention are amazing, especially when you think how many people around the world have lost there homes recently to natural disasters and it’s also reassuring to hear from the inventors that they won’t be selling out to the likes of Mr Gaddafi etc.

SOS: Save Our Supplies

Thursday, May 19th, 2011

We came across this simple and beautiful crafted video by the guys at In Secret Agreement for doc2doc.org, a non-profit organization that saves usable medical supplies from being discarded in the U.S. and sends them to hospitals in the developing world. Take a couple of minutes out of your day and help the SOS message go further.

This week DF received an email from Leeds based design student Adam Morten asking if we could set him a 24hr brief as part of his Smalls project.

We duly obliged with the brief, Invent a new colour.

24hrs later a letter arrived at DF HQ informing us that the finished result awaited us on the Smalls website. First we have to say what a great idea this is for a final year project and secondly how impressed we are with the result.

Great work Adam and we look forward to seeing what you get up to in the coming weeks.
